In modern agriculture, special fertilizers are an additional category of nutritional products aimed at increasing the yield and profitability of crops. These special fertilizers include biostimulants, which are currently of particular interest in terms of overcoming environmental stresses that increasingly occur as a result of climate change.

In this context, Rotam Agrochemicals Europe has released two biostimulants, both registered in organic agriculture and complementary to each other.

Yoduo®, released on the market in 2021, is a 100% plant-based product which, as its main activity, improves flowering and fruit setting, while Starstreak®, to be released on the market in 2022, mainly works by assisting the development the roots.

Rotam's new product is a Leonardite-based soil conditioner that contains humic and fulvic extracts. Leonardite is mined in North Dakota in the US and is applied exclusively by physical treatments.

Starstreak® improves the development of roots and, in general, the vegetative development of plants. Humic and fulvic acids are known for having properties that improve the absorption of trace elements, leading to better crop health and resilience under stressful conditions. The acidic pH of Starstreak, unlike many other products on the market that are alkaline, favors its application in mixtures with pesticides and other fertilizers.

Yoduo® is biological ally of flowering. In the growth cycle of plants, flowering is one of the most important stages that will significantly affect the quality and quantity of production.

Yoduo® is a product designed to increase the number of flowers, as well as the frequency of flowering and fruit setting. It also enables the plant to overcome environmental stresses more easily and, therefore, achieve higher production.

The biostimulant is 100% of vegetable origin and contains 17 different left-handed amino acids, which are most needed by cells to build proteins, both with enzymatic and structural functions.

The benefits of boron and zinc are also added to the benefits of amino acids and are fundamental microelements in flowering and fruit setting present in water-soluble forms at 0.4% and 1.5%, respectively. They also ensure better vegetative development among plants, as well as the higher permeability of cell membranes, significantly increasing the mobility of nutrients within plants and their photosynthetic capacity.

The application of the product on the soil significantly improves microfloraat at the root level, ensuring better absorption of nutrients beneficial to plants subjected to stressful conditions, enabling them to regain vigor due to increased translocation activity.

Yoduo®, therefore, acts as a growth inducer. Because of the supply of nutritional elements, it increases flowering and fruit size, as well as resistance to abiotic stresses, such as poor lighting and temperature changes, and any stress caused by pesticide treatments.

The crops that have shown the best response to treatment with Yoduo® in greenhouse and/or open field treatments are potato, eggplant, tomato, pepper, melon, watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, courgette, apple tree, pear, peach, apricot, plum, olive, citrus, grape, tobacco, soy, garden and ornamental plants.

The biostimulant can be administered both through foliar and root application. In the first instance, the recommended dose for each application is 1 to 2 liters per hectare at a volume of 500 to 1000 liters per hectare. The entire leaf surface should be sprayed in the following vegetative phases:

•    Five to seven days before flowering.
•    The end of flowering.
•    Seven to ten days after the end of flowering.

Yoduo® can be used at a dose of 2 liters per hectare with a single application in case of specific stressful situations.
