Brazil is concerned about a lack of available pesticides and other inputs impacting food production. The Minister of Agriculture, Reinhold Stephanes, says that global demand for such inputs is growing, but that supply is lagging. “The problem [for buyers] is not so much rising prices as a lack of supply.” Among impediments to supply is the closing of Chinese pesticide factories in the run up to the Olympic Games in August, he adds. China is a major supplier of agrochemicals to Brazil. The country is to close factories close to cities where the Games will take place, Mr Stephanes explains. The Minister emphasised the importance of stimulating the production of four crops: beans, rice, maize and wheat.
