The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) released the list of the 100 wealthiest municipalities in Brazil in agribusiness production.

The ranking was based on 2020 data from Municipal Agricultural Production (PAM), collected by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The classification was made on this information, taking into account the value of the production of temporary and permanent crops and the Gross Domestic Product of the Municipalities (GDP) based on 2019.

According to the Map, the IBGE data highlight the production of soybeans, corn, cotton, coffee and sugar cane. In the reference year of the research, the value of agricultural output in the ranked municipalities was R$151.2 billion, equivalent to 32% of the total value, estimated at R$470.5 billion.

The State of Mato Grosso concentrates most of the municipalities classified among the 100 richest, with 35 in total, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul with 13, Goiás with ten, Bahia with nine, Minas Gerais with eight and São Paulo with six. The other municipalities are distributed in Paraná (04), Pará (04), Rio Grande do Sul (02), Maranhão (02), Piauí (02), Brasília (01), Pernambuco (01) and Tocantins (01).

In the state of Mato Grosso, agriculture is a relevant participant in the GDP, estimated at 21.36%. Sorriso, the leader in the generation of value, agriculture represents 26.65% of the municipality's GDP, and Sapezal, the leader in cotton production, represents 53.17% of the value of the municipal GDP. In the states of the country’s northern region, agriculture also has a high share of GDP – in Rondônia, 13.9% and in Tocantins, 14.17%.

Soybean, cotton and corn are the main products responsible for the success of these municipalities, as they carry high levels of technology and productivity. Of the production value obtained by the municipality of Sorriso in 2020, 52.0% was obtained from soybeans and 35.0% from corn. São Desidério (BA), the second-largest producer of herbaceous cotton, had 38.3% of its revenue from this product. The Sapezal municipality, the largest producer of herbaceous cotton in the country, had 35.5% of its revenue from soybeans and 54.4% from herbaceous cotton.
