How to produce bigger and more tomato fruits without chemical growth regulatorqrcode

Plant growth regulators are molecules that influence the development and growth of plants and generally auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and ethylene are included within this category. For the purpose of fruit set and fruit size increase, many farmers prefer to use various kinds of chemical plant regulators. However, this use sometimes causes production of soft fruit which is connected with low quality and short shelf-life of fruits during distribution time.  


If there is a way to produce bigger and more tomato fruits without plant growth regulators, is it interesting?


Global Agro, a technology based green solution provider in Korea, recently found a way to realize this way.

This method is unexpectedly simple. Just drench a microbial extract product (Mesona) and a seaweed bio-stimulant (Smart Ocean Kelp) as a tank-mixing application.


According to field trial results performed by KNC Central Research Institute in Korea, this combined application increased the tomato fruit weight and length by 11.1% and 5.8%, respectively. Especially, during winter season in Korea, tomato famers usually suffer from difficulties in facilitating the plant growth and fruit size increase because of cold temperature. To solve problems, plant growth regulators or hormone products are sometimes used. However, those kinds of products are often useless or result in producing soft tomato fruits which are easy to burst. The combined application of Mesona and SmartOcean Kelp is an effective alternative to replace this conventional approach.


By drenching Mesona and Samrt Ocean Kelp together 3 times with 2-3 days interval, distinct fruit weight and length increase was identified. In addition, the hardness of tomato fruits increased by 26.7% higher than control plot.


The exact mode of action to explain this phenomenon is being studied. The absorption facilitation function of Mesona and plentiful natural growth-related components within Smart Ocean Kelp seem to be related to the key. Mesona, the microbial-extract based biological product helps crops to absorb water and nutrition stably near root zone even under the high saline soil condition. In case the crops suffer from cold temperature or soil-originated stress, roots may not work well, even if there are plentiful sources to use. Because Mesona helps crops sustain the root function under the unfavorable abiotic stress, lots of natural plant growth-related components contained Smart Ocean Kelp can be provided stably to the crops. 


In addition, this combined synergy effect seems harmonized in the process of the natural metabolic process within the plant. Compelling injection of plant growth regulators often produces low quality or soft fruits with short shelf-life. Considering the fact that the application of Mesona and Smart Ocean Kelp produces more elastic and higher quality fruits, it is likely that plant can use the natural hormones provided by Mesona and Smart Ocean Kelp more efficiently and naturally.


It should be continuously studied and tested whether this interesting combination can be effective on other crops and purposes. However, it is obvious that we’ve got one more option to recommend for famers who don’t want to use synthesized plant growth regulators.
