The National Bureau of Statistics announced the 2021 grain production data on December 6, where China’s total grain output in 2021 reached 682 billion kg, an increase of 13.3 billion kg over the previous year, at a 2% increase.

It showed that the nationwide grain production hit a new high, having stayed at 682 billion kg for seven consecutive years.

Grain planting area increased by 12.95 million mu (1 hectare = 15 mu), increase of 0.7%

In 2021, China’s grain planting area reached 1.764 billion mu, 12.95 million mu over the previous year, a 0.7% increase, a second consecutive year of growth. The planting area of corn and wheat increased while rice fell slightly. The legume planting area decreased while the planting area of potatoes stayed stable, with a moderate increase.

Food production increased by 4.8 kg, at an increase of 1.2%

In 2021, autumn grain was affected in some regions due to disastrous weather. However, most of the country’s primary agricultural areas had good sunlight, temperature and rainfall. This was beneficial to the growth of food crops, leading to a satisfactory yield. Meanwhile, the planting area of the high-yield corn was expanded, and its proportion in grain crops increased, which led to an increase of per unit yield. In 2021, China’s per unit yield of grain was 387 kg per mu, a rise of 4.8 kg per mu over the previous year, increasing 1.2%.

Northeast China, Inner Mongolia contributed significantly to grain production rise

Out of China’s 31 provinces (autonomous region and municipalities), 27 achieved increased grain production. Among them, the three North-Eastern provinces and Inner Mongolia attained an increase of 9.4 billion kg, contributing 70.3% to the country’s grain production increase. Xinjiang, Anhui, Hunan, Sichuan and Shandong all achieved a growth of more than 500 million kg.
