Sustainability and innovation are not just words at Unipac. Considered one of the most technical and complete polymer transformation industries in Brazil, the company has adopted these themes as an inherent part of its values, strategies and investments. The work developed in these areas was again recognized by the market with two awards, the Plástico Sul Award for Innovation and Sustainability and the Large Packaging Cases Award, both for designing packaging with plasma technology.

In the 2nd edition of the Plástico Sul Award for Innovation and Sustainability, created to value companies that bet on differentiated actions and products that promote the circular economy and developing production process technologies, Unipac was recognized in the area of sustainability in the category, "Production Clean,” and in the area of innovation in the “Smart Packaging” and “Blow” categories. Carried out by Revista Plástico Sul and organized by the Union of Plastic Material Industries of the Northeast of Rio Grande do Sul (Simplás), the award took place on 9th November in Caxias do Sul (RS), broadcasted by the TV Plástico Sul channel on YouTube.

Unipac was also the winner of the Great Packaging Cases Award, given by Revista Embalagem Marca during a ceremony held on 11th November on its YouTube channel. The objective of the award is to encourage and value excellence in Brazilian packaging, and was assessed in terms of the benefits they brought to the industry, consumers and the environment. Criteria, such as material and cost reduction, online productivity, innovation, value addition, design, environmental impact, among others, were evaluated.

Cutting edge technology

With considerable know-how and being a leader in manufacturing rigid packaging for pesticides, Unipac has invested heavily in innovation and offers customized solutions focusing on the customer, and prioritizes the reduction of environmental damage throughout the entire chain. “We are honored and happy to receive these awards. With each project, we meet specific demands and evolve in terms of processes, technology, competitiveness and sustainability, contributing positively to the ecosystem we are a part of,” said Mauro Fernandes, Unipac's Commercial Director.

Rigid packaging manufactured with plasma technology by Unipac has been used in the bottling of pesticides, which is unprecedented in this segment in Brazil, and the company recently won first place in the “Sustainability” category of the ABRE Award, promoted by the Brazilian Packaging Association.

Known as "the fourth state of matter," plasma technology uses gases and vapors that are electronically excited and become reactive, a process that forms a nanometric barrier layer on the inside of plastic packaging, with the aim of preventing solvent migration and the loss of active ingredients. This solution, compared to other conventional barrier technologies, offers lower environmental impact, as a small amount of environmentally friendly gases is used to create the barrier layer, as well as lower energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It is a stable, solvent-free process and the final product is 100% recycled.

Unipac's plasma-protected packaging follows strict protocols based on international standards for assessing chemical compatibility and current regulatory requirements. “Sustainability is part of our strategies and we adopt efficient and feasible policies for the perpetuity of our business and the planet, in line with the principles of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). These awards show we are on the right path,” Fernandes said in conclusion.
