China’s first tembotrion technical for export granted registration

On 11th November, 2021, the Pesticide Administration Department of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced 136 newly approved pesticide registrations, with Shandong Hailir Chemical Co., Ltd’s tembotrion technical 98% being granted its first registration for export in China.

Tembotrion is a new ketone herbicide for use on cornfields, which is highly active and has low residue, while effectively controlling a large variety of weeds without residual activity, being safe for mammals and environment-friendly. It has good rain fastness and a broad herbicidal spectrum, being effective in controlling annual cornfield grassy weeds and broad-leaved weeds.

As a post-emergence foliar herbicide, tembotrion can be used to prevent and control grassy weeds and broad-leaved weeds in cornfields. It also eradicates weeds that are resistant to glyphosate, dicamba and ALS inhibitors. Its mixture with Isoxadifen-ethyl can protect corn from UV damage, has a broad spectrum effect, is fast acting and is very environmentally safe. Meanwhile, it features a long-lasting effect and requires less amounts for use, while being very effective in the prevention and control of weeds.

The patent for tempotron expired in October 2019, and the sale of the product has increased since its market release in 2008, with a CAGR of 51.6% from 2009 to 2014. In recent years, the annual sale of tempotron has exceeded $200 million, which is rising sharply each year, with good market performance in the United States, Brazil, Mexico and the European Union. With the gradual exit of atrazine from the market, the rise in the sale of tempotron is estimated to continue year-by-year. The product has always attracted close attention from pesticide companies both at home and abroad.

Currently, overseas tempotron registrations are mainly tempotrons 44 g/L OD, tembotrion 420 g/L (34.5%) SC, tembotrion + dicamba diglycolamine salt 22.56% SC and tembotrion 413 g/L (33.9%) tembotrion + thiencarbazone SC. There is no track record of the export of tembotrion technical in China. It is reported that tembotrion has the highest potential among HPPD inhibitor herbicides, having bright future market prospects.
