This zero-residue fertilizer developed by the Spanish biotechnology company TEBRIO helps transition it towards more respectful agriculture with the environment
Its introduction in the agri-food sector increases vegetative development, increases the growth of the crop and avoids the use of pesticides
Spain is the leading European power in the production of fruit and vegetables, with more than 30 million tons produced per year
With more than 30 million tons produced per year, 17 million cultivable hectares, €18,000 million invoiced and approximately 280,000 jobs generated annually, Spain is the leading European power in growing fruit and vegetables. As recorded in the last Eurostat, this type of crop represents the most valuable activity in the community agri-food sector.
However, these figures significantly impact the environment, especially in Spanish geography that historically stands out for its higher production. This is the case of the Murcia region, recognized as "La Huerta de Europa" for its citrus crops, red fruits, melons and watermelons, tomatoes and vegetables that reach national, European and third-country tables. Murcia is among the top exporting communities of fresh fruit and vegetables in Spain, with a total of 2.5 million tons and a value of €2,564 million in recent years.
In this context, the environmental impact of the agricultural industry in the region is increasingly noticeable since it is one of the areas with the highest percentage of drought combined with intensive farming practices. The consequence of this type of phenomenon is that crops demand high amounts of nutrients and water that imply actions that are less respectful of the planet, such as the use of nitrogenous phytosanitary products that seriously affect fauna and flora, contamination of aquifers and nearby water bodies such as the Mar Menor, changes in the landscape, more significant soil erosion that increases suspended dust, and the use of pesticides in areas close to towns.
One of the solutions to this problem would be a transition to a more environmentally friendly agriculture model in which one introduces zero-residue products and practices. Aware of this situation, TEBRIO, the first Spanish biotechnology company specializing in industrial breeding and transformation of the insect Tenebrio Molitor, has developed oFrass, the first 100% organic biofertilizer based on insects for use in plant nutrition. A product without heavy metals, with a fixation of environmental nitrogen and solubilization of free phosphorus and potassium in the soil that helps to create a balance in agriculture to ensure the least possible impact on the environment.
More responsible agriculture is possible
Among its applications and environmental benefits, oFrass, allows reducing the stress of abiotic origin (excess or insufficient water, cold, salinity), the need for pesticides, reduction of nitrogen fertilizers, subscriber costs and associated labor to cultivation. In addition, its use in the agri-food sector significantly increases vegetative development, increases crop yield and improves the soil by accelerating the exchange of available nutrients.
oFrass is also characterized by having Bio-Fortifying, Bio-Stimulating and Bio-Phytofortifying capacity. It contains many essential nutrients, beneficial microorganisms and organic matter while maintaining an optimal carbon/nitrogen ratio. In addition, together with its neutral PH value, it improves the soil capacities and the plant’s interaction with the environment at all levels.
These characteristics are essential for ending waste and achieving a transition towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.
About Tebrio
TEBRIO, a pioneer company in the industrial breeding of insects in Europe, was born as MealFood Europe in 2014 in Salamanca (Castilla y León) to respond to the need to propose alternatives to primary production for feeding the world population. The company is committed to a model based on innovation and technology and using sustainable industrial solutions and thus re-establishing the natural balance. TEBRIO comprises 19 professionals and will expand its workforce with 200 more workers over the next four years.
