The high toxicity insecticide terbufos, been banned in China 3 years ago, has recently been approved again by Chinese authorities on peanut in some northern peanut-growing provinces. Two Chinese pesticide companies, Hebei Haoyang and Tianjing Nongyao have gained the registrations for its technical and formulation product respectively.
Due to the high risks on the operators, China has cancelled all of its registrations in 2008. However, its substitutes were not welcomed by the growers as they are less cost-effective. Some manufacturers have been engaged and success in its formulation optimizing on an attempted to reduce its risks, which made the insecticide regained its markets in China.
Though only approved being applied on peanut in some northern peanut-growing provinces such as Henan, Hebei and Shandong, some southern growers are long for its loosening as they could apply terbufos on sugar cane. Even no permit has been grant on this vulnerable crop, the growers are still able to spray the insecticide on sugar cane secretly. People familiar with the situation told Agropages that terbufos had never disappeared in some southern province like Guangxi even during its forbidden time. Some of the products have even reach Burma through the border between Yunnan province and Vietnam.
"Since its limitation will never affect its presence in southern market, why not lifting the ban entirely? It is better to guide the grower on how to use safely than simply impose limitations on them.” complained a distributor.
