Pesticide use in Hungary averages 1.5 kg per hectare

Pesticide use in Hungary averaged 1.5 kg per hectare in 2019, around the mid-range in a comparison with other European Union member states, news agency MTI reports, citing data compiled by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

The rate of pesticide use in Hungary was close to that in the Czech Republic (1.4 kg/hectare), Poland (1.7 kg/hectare) and Slovakia (1.2 kg/hectare). The Netherlands had one of the highest rates of pesticide use in the EU, 5.1 kg/hectare, while the rate in Romania, at just 0.7 kg/per hectare, was among the lowest.

The KSH data show Hungarian farmers used 866 tonnes of sulfur, toxic to fungus, on 81,000 hectares in 2019. They used 422 tonnes of the herbicide glyphosate on 272,000 hectares and 408 tonnes of the herbicide (S)-metolachlor on 241,000 hectares. Farmers used 235 tonnes of the herbicide terbuthylazine on 418,000 hectares.
