The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted DuPont registration approval for a broader label that allows livestock to be grazed on pasture immediately following a broadcast application of Velpar® L at rates of 4.5 pints per acre or less. The updated label also states that treated acres may be cut, dried and fed 38 days after application. The previous label required a 60-day waiting period prior to grazing or cutting treated pasture.

Velpar® L provides single-application control of smutgrass and other tough weeds in established stands of Bermuda grass and bahiagrass. Smutgrass is an invasive bunch grass that ranks as one of the most problematic weeds in perennial grass pastures and is most prevalent in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Velpar® L also controls little barley, barnyardgrass, dogfennel, fescue, lespedeza, maypop (passionflower), oxalis, pepperweed and pigweed. For the most effective smutgrass control, apply Velpar® L when weeds are actively growing – typically early May to late June in the southeastern United States.

"This expanded label for Velpar® L gives producers enhanced grazing and harvesting flexibility to control tough weeds and protect the quantity and value of forage crops,” said John Chrosniak, regional director, North America – DuPont Crop Protection. “Being able to graze or use hay more quickly is a critical advantage at times in the season when quality forage is in short supply.”
