Recently, Europe’s crop protection industry (ECPA) has adopted a set of ambitious commitments to support Europe’s new Green Deal, including an investment of over €14 billion in new technologies and more sustainable products by 2030.

In addition to this investment, ECPA also plans to ramp up waste collection and increase the levels of training among farmers in Europe as part of its response to the EU’s Farm to Fork and Biodiversity strategies.

ECPA members, BASF, Syngenta, FMC, Bayer Crop Science, Corteva Agriscience and Nufarm have signed these commitments and shared their insights about these commitments.

Livio Tedeschi, BASF Senior Vice President Agricultural Soultions EMEA said: “We want to shape a sustainable future for farming, the biggest job on Earth. We’ve been serving farmers for more than 100 years and we want to use all our knowledge and passion to find the right balance for success for farmers, agriculture and future generations.”

Steve Hawkins, Syngenta Director EMEA said: “I am signing these commitments on behalf of Syngenta because with strong conviction we believe these are the right commitments for this time in European agriculture, and importantly we believe ultimately they support all of our key stakeholders as the ECPA and importantly farmers all across the EU.”

Marc Hullebroeck, FMC President EMEA said: “The industry will be investing €14 billion in innovation that is complementary to existing solutions in a farmer’s toolbox. For example, the development of biological products with favourable toxicological and environmental safety profiles in combination with other crop protection solutions and the further deployment of digital tools that allow more targeted and precise use of pesticides. These are a couple of commitments that represent real action that will drive change in the crop protection industry.”

Bruno Tremblay, Bayer Crop Science Regional Head EMEA said: “With the 2030 commitments and investment into digital and biopesticide innovation, our industry will be part of the solution for achieving the goals of EU Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy. A point that is especially important to me is the commitment to transparency which will be most critical in building trust as we work together to advance sustainable agriculture. ”

Eric Dereudre, Corteva Agriscience External Affairs Leader said: “I am signing these commitments because at Corteva Agriscience we want to create a better understanding and trust between consumers and the agricultural sector. We are working to help farmers in their mission to produce safe and nutritious food while continuously improving the efficiency and sustainability of food production. We also believe that collectively and in full transparency we can make a positive impact faster.”

Hildo Brilleman, Nufarm Regional Gereral Manager EMEA said:“I am signing these commitments to ensure we play our part in creating a balanced agricultural system that minimises the impact on biodiversity while efficiently producing high quality food and crops.”
