Syngenta in North America announced that Sequence®, Touchdown HiTech® and Touchdown Total® herbicides received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval for use on sugarbeets. These label expansions increase weed control options for sugarbeet growers while offering complementary resistance-management control.
Sequence combines the performance of two powerful weed solutions: glyphosate, a knockdown herbicide, and S-
metolachlor, a residual herbicide. The combination of these active ingredients offers sugarbeet growers reliable management of a variety of weeds, including common lambsquarters, crabgrass, kochia, nightshade and wheat, which can severely affect yield potential of sugarbeet crops.
"The introduction of Sequence to the sugarbeet industry provides a history of proven efficacy on a variety of problem-causing weeds in this market,” said Stephanie Schwenkne, Sequence brand manager,
Syngenta. “With two unique modes of action, Sequence broadens the window of opportunity for flexible application timing and improves the performance of a glyphosate-based herbicide program.”
Touchdown HiTech and Touchdown Total bring the power of glyphosate technology to sugarbeets. Touchdown HiTech is the most concentrated-glyphosate product available, containing 5 pounds of glyphosate per gallon, without surfactants or additives. This allows growers to customize the use of Touchdown HiTech to their needs. Touchdown Total, with 4.17 pounds of glyphosate per gallon, offers proven crop safety with glyphosate-tolerant crops.
"Touchdown HiTech and Touchdown Total offer sugarbeet growers weed control that’s been proven in over 230 other crops,” said Kevin Gesse, Touchdown brand manager,
Syngenta. “Both these products are packed with glyphosate to burndown even the toughest weeds. Touchdown HiTech and Touchdown Total are products that will integrate effectively into any glyphosate-tolerant sugarbeet weed-control program.”
Glyphosate-based Touchdown HiTech and Touchdown Total should be integrated into a weed-control program that incorporates other modes of action, as many weed species have recently shown resistance to glyphosate. Sequence, which is made of complementary components of glyphosate and S-
metolachlor, will have efficacy and residual control on weeds that are resistance to glyphosate, since there are currently no known weed biotypes resistant to S-
metolachlor.
"Resistance management should always be a high priority in weed management and a solid strategy includes a herbicide program containing multiple modes of action,” said Schwenke. “For optimal weed control,
Syngenta recommends the use of burndown products, like Touchdown HiTech and Touchdown Total, with herbicides employing multiple modes of action, or in a program with residual herbicides, such as Sequence.”
