Argentina's Sindiveg (National Union of Plant Protection Products Industry) has launched guidelines titled “Correct and Safe Use of Pesticides”, an initiative included in their online training platform for the technical training of Brazilian farmers, to facilitate access to “good agricultural practices”.
“Pesticides are essential for Brazilian agriculture. Its use is necessary to obtain increasing productivity indexes and, through its correct and safe handling and use, it is possible to combine this benefit with (I) protection of the environment, by reducing product residues applied in dosages approved; (II) ensuring the safety of food consumption, which will be produced in compliance with the maximum application periods and in the quantities indicated and (III) security for rural producers and applicators, who will be adequately protected and exposed to a lower level of waste,” a union statement said.
According to the President of Sindiveg, Júlio Borges Garcia, “pesticides have as their main objective in crop management, protection against the natural enemies of crops, which are insects, diseases and weeds. Without these products, it is impossible to produce food on a large scale to feed the entire population. However, because they are special products, they require special care in their use. In this sense, Sindiveg is committed to promoting good agricultural practices and to increasingly improving the level of knowledge in the field to guarantee increasingly conscious and sustainable agriculture.”
The recommendations include, according to the union, 10 “golden rules” that involve planning, product certification, correct transport, individual protection, and faithful application to the doses recommended by the agronomist.
