Brazilian imports of the herbicide, glyphosate, from China are 50% more expensive than the active ingredient that is produced in the country, a market study reveals. The market research organisation, Allier Brasil Consulting, found that the imported formulated and packaged product costs $9-$9.60/litre, while that produced in Brazil costs $6-$6.50/litre. Even the withdrawal of the "anti-dumping" import duty on Chinese glyphosate would leave Chinese exporters at a disadvantage with prices only falling to $8.50/litre. Brazil reduced the tariff in February from 35.8% to 11.7%. The Allier chief, Flavio Hirata, gave the results in an interview with the Brazilian daily business newspaper, Gazeta Mercantil. Brazil has imported much of its glyphosate from Asia, including China, for several years due to price benefits.
