Summary of China’s nematicide product registrations

Plant nematode disease is a common plant disease in the growth of grain, vegetable and cash crops in China. The disease has the characteristics of invisibility and is difficult to diagnose, for which there is a lack of pesticides for prevention and control, having become a threat to agricultural production in China. Researches show that China's annual agricultural production each year decreases by up to 12% due to damages caused by nematodes.

World-widely, the annual economic losses caused by nematode are attracting concern and attention within the industry. Major agrochemical companies in recent years have developed different kinds of nematode control products, including biological agents and chemical agents, which are applied in different countries and regions, having appeared to be fruitful. 

This article summarizes China's registered nematicide products, noting that the prevention and control of nematodes in China still relies on rather old pesticides, meaning that that there is a great potential in Chinese market for novel nematicide products. According to China Pesticide Registration Watch, there are currently 98 products having been registered still within validity in China for prevention and control of nematode diseases. The registered active ingredients include fosthiazate, abamectin, dazomet, ethoprophos, paecilomyces lilacinus, carbofuran and verticillium chlamydosporium, of which fosthiazate and abamectin are the mostly registered ingredients. Registered scope application covers cucumber, tobacco, tomato, sweet potato, rice and soybean, but are mainly concentrated on vegetables such as cucumber and tomato.

In terms of manufacturers with registrations, Foshan Yinghui Crop Science ranks first, in possession of 7 products, followed by Shandong United Pesticide ranking the second. In addition, Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha, Ltd (ISK) holds registration of fosthiazate 93% TC and 10% GR, being the only overseas company with registered nematicide products.
