Roundup Ready and LibertyLink corn growers in Ontario and Quebec have been granted a new weed-killing option to tank mix with whichever chemical their corn crop is meant to withstand.

The Calgary-based Canadian arm of Bayer CropScience on Friday announced it had picked up registration for Vios G3, a dual-action product with Group 2 (thiencarbazone-methyl) and Group 27 (tembotrione) active ingredients.

Vios must be tank-mixed either with glyphosate, such as Monsanto's Roundup, or glufosinate ammonium, such as Bayer's Liberty 200, providing a third mode of action.

The tank mix is meant for use against both grasses and broadleaf weeds and in managing herbicide resistance, the company said.
Vios is registered for use in field corn crops and for residual control of 16 different weeds including resistant strains of green and yellow foxtail, lamb's-quarters and redroot pigweed.

"Vios G3 offers growers new innovative actives that have not been available for corn growers in Eastern Canada," Greg Good, Bayer CropScience's portfolio manager for row crops, said in Friday's release. "It gives growers a true multiple mode of action product."

Vios, which is registered only in Ontario and Quebec, will be marketed in a concentrated formulation by the 1.78-litre jug. One jug is meant to treat 40 acres of corn.
