The recent proposal of Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, to ban Tricyclazole and Buprofezin in India is no doubt a big blow to the country's dynamic agrochemicals industry. This extreme and unprecedented action, would lead to dire consequences on food security and economic prosperity of the country because both the products are used to reduce the losses from most important pests (rice blast / Brown Plant Hopper) damage and improve the yield and quality of the most important crop (rice) in India. It was all the more shocking that this decision was taken without any logic or based upon any scientific evidence to substantiate, which is unfair.

Also, it is unfortunate that despite the EU regulators are still reviewing the safety data of Tricyclazole, this ban is proposed. Therefore, the urgency shown by the Ministry in this entire issue is opaque and legally questionable. Instead of exercising control over the “indiscriminate use” or “misuse” of chemicals and establishing proper residue monitoring systems in the country for checking export consignments of Basmati rice to EU, the invaluable fungicide molecule Tricyclazole is being blamed.

This sudden move by the Ministry is based on mere negative public perception of pesticides usage, without any transparency that casts aspersion of bias favouring certain groups with vested interests and questionable motives. The industry should be given sufficient opportunities to represent itself before imposing such blanket bans on duly registered pesticides which are used successfully for past many decades in India.

"We strongly believe that science will prevail over sensational claims and the proposed ban on Tricyclazole and Buprofezin will be revoked," N. K. Aggarwal President, ACFI
