IndiaCropLife India, an association of 16 R&D driven crop science companies has welcomed the the Union Cabinet approval of Pesticides Management Bill (PMB).
Asitava Sen, Chief Executive Officer, CropLife India; said, "CropLife India welcomes the early introduction of the PMB. The Bill is in the right direction, intent and addresses the concerns of the farmers. We, as a leading industry association of crop science companies, have submitted several recommendations to the concerned ministry on the draft bill. We emphasise that the process should be science-based, consultative and stakeholders be brought to confidence to what extent those recommendations have been incorporated in the final bill. We now recommend that the Bill should be referred to a Select Committee of Parliament for detailed consultation with concerned stakeholders.”
Speaking on the Bill, Sen added, “The industry unanimously recommended decriminalisation of agro-input manufacturing sector (removal of code of Criminal Procedure, 1973); since it may be counter-productive and create a negative investment climate. CropLife India have recommended that considering best practices globally and in the interest of the Indian farmers; molecule being introduced first time in the country should get a minimum of 5 years data protection from the date of registration in India and the same provisions be incorporated in the PMB."
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Pesticides Management Bill, 2020, which seeks to replace the Insecticides Act, 1968, for regulating the pesticide sector by fixing prices and setting up an authority.
