The Monsanto Company said Wednesday it has opened a new corn breeding facility in Flora.
Company officials said the facility will be used for developing a higher yielding hybrid corn seed that is resistant to diseases, heat, pesticides and other environmental stresses.
Critics said this type of modified food is not safe for human consumption, and several lawsuits have already been filed against the company.
But Monsanto said the allegations are not true. The company said it is producing hybrid corn that is better for the environment.
Company officials said the facility will have nine full-time workers and about 60 additional workers during the peak summer months.
