UFG, AgBiTech open state-of-the-art laboratory in Brazil

In early November, AgBiTech, in partnership with UFG (Federal University of Goiás), opened a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to researching biological pest management.
This investment by one of the world’s leading manufacturers of baculovirus for controlling caterpillars in agriculture will be located in the city of Goiânia and aims to be a center of innovation in this area.
According to experts, the use of baculoviruses as biological pesticides is strategic for Brazil, as they can help counter the resistance in caterpillars in conjunction with insecticides currently available in the market. This will play a major role in controlling the Spodoptera complex, as well as Helicoverpa armigera and Chrysodeixis includens, which are becoming more resistant to chemical products.
According to Rejane Faria, Technology Director of Samambaia Technological Park, where the new research laboratory will operate, the strategic alliance signed by the two bodies is a model of cutting-edge technological innovation. “The company's proximity to researchers and students will promote knowledge sharing and the launch of projects relevant to agribusiness,” he said.
Adriano Vilas Boas, Representative of AgBiTech CEO in Latin America, added, “This is another important investment that AgBiTech made in Brazil. The laboratory will be located in the Technology Park at the university, and researchers from the company and the renowned institution aim to launch several projects together, to benefit agriculture in the Midwest and Brazil.”
Janayne Rezende, Researcher at AgBiTech, who is responsible for the laboratory’s launch, explained that the joint project between the company and university will highlight the importance of biological products used in pest management around the country. “Baculoviruses are high-quality products that increase productivity and sustainability in agriculture,” Rezende said.
