Chinese companies registered for the first time Pinoxaden formulation after its patent expired
Global Market
Pinoxaden is a post-emergence and selective herbicide developed and launched by Syngenta in 2006. In 2007, its global sales exceeded US$100 million, and reached US$425 million in 2014. Currently, Pinoxaden has been marketed on all major cereal markets worldwide. It has become a leading product in cereal field grass weed herbicides and ranks among the top ten herbicides in the world.
Pinoxaden is used mainly in two major areas: cereals (wheat and barley, etc.) and non-crop fields (turf and gardening, etc.), with market share of about 60% and 40% respectively.
The market of Pinoxaden is in more than 50 countries and regions such as Europe, America, Asia Pacific and South Africa. The most important market is the cereal herbicide market in Europe and North America, with annual sales of more than 100 million US dollars.
China Production & Export
The Chinese patent for Pinoxaden has expired in March 2019, and this product has attracted the attention of domestic pesticide companies. As of September 30, 2019, three Chinese companies have already registered Pinoxaden TC from ICAMA, and many other companies have such plan to register and manufacture. In August 2019, Chinese companies registered for the first time Pinoxaden formulation, which is 5% Pinoxaden EC and 10% Pinoxaden OD.
According to AGROPAGES’ data (
read sample), since Pinoxaden was in patent period before 2019, no Chinese company exported the product. After the patent expired in 2019, some companies have exported a small amount, with the destination countries are Argentina, the United States, and Brazil.
Future Opportunity
In recent years, weed varieties in wheat fields have changed greatly, and its resistance has developed rapidly, which make it difficult to control. Pinoxaden is highly efficient and broad-spectrum, has little impact on the environment, and can be mixed or compounded with most broad-leaved weed herbicides in wheat fields. Due to the difference in the site of action, Pinoxaden has no cross-resistance with other ACCase inhibitor herbicides, makes it an important tool for controlling weeds in wheat fields. Pinoxaden can not only used in cereals, but also in the non-crop field, and the latter may have potential to develop.
