Cheminova, Inc. has received Federal EPA registration for Fyfanon Plus ULVInsecticide to control tarnished plant bugs and other insects in cotton. Individual state registrations are pending.
"Fyfanon Plus ULV is a pre-mixed combination of malathion and gamma cyhalothrin,” says Jim Barrentine, technical services director for Cheminova, Inc. “Gamma cyhalothrin is the most active pyrethroid in the world with the lowest use-rate of any comparable insecticide. Malathion provides superior performance against a broad range of insects, so this combination is a powerful, new tool for cotton producers.”
Barrentine says both farmers and aerial applicators will like Fyfanon Plus ULV. “We’ve looked at ULV applications of malathion plus a pyrethroid for Mid-South tarnished plant bug control for four years now,” he says. “Application costs are lower because ULV is very efficient for aerial applicators. In addition, Fyfanon Plus ULV controls both nymph and adult plant bugs and provides residual activity. Thelonger residual offers opportunities for growers to reduce the number or frequency of insecticide applications.”
Barrentine says Fyfanon Plus ULV applications should be made in a one-quart-per-acre spray volume. “Fyfanon Plus ULV is applied at from 12 to 16 ounces per acre with enough refined vegetable oil, like Amigo, Soy-Dex or Soysurf, added to make a total spray volume of 32-ounces,” says Barrentine.
