The Maldivian government submitted a bill to the Parliament regarding setting standards for the import, use, production, export and proper disposal of pesticides.

The statement released by the President's Office expressed the importance of properly regulating potentially threatening agents like pesticides in protecting the ecology of Maldivian islands and their residents.

The bill also includes best practises for pesticide usage with consideration to health, wellness, environmental and ecological conservation concerns.

Additionally, the bill necessitates the establishment of a Pesticide Unit within the pertinent ministry. The unit, recognized as a government entity, will be tasked with assisting and protecting the public from adverse effects of pesticide misuse, take necessary actions to negate safety concerns and promote best practises.

Furthermore, the unit will also include a research division with official laboratories tasked with monitoring, evaluating and collecting data to facilitate safe decision making.

Non-compliance with the Pesticides Bill can result in the imposition of a fine between MVR 5,000 and MVR 100,000 depending on the severity of the infraction.
