Recently, the Provincial Government of China’s major pesticide production province, Shandong, issued an Emergent Announcement of the prohibition of “Low Added Value, Low Technology, High Energy Consumption, High Waste Discharge and High Risk” Chemical Projects. As a follow-up measure, all chemical projects within the province were subjected to joint reviews at the provincial level to check for compliance with the requirements of the announcement.

After the Xiangshui Explosion Incident on March 21 this year, correctional action was taken in the chemical industry in China’s coastal regions, including the provinces of Hebei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian, where non-compliant chemical manufacturers and industrial parks were shut down. On June 22, Shandong Province requested overall and all-round risk checks to clear hidden dangers.

In 2018, a total of 104 chemical enterprises in Shandong Province were listed as the Top 500 Petrochemical Enterprises of China, on which Jiangsu ranked second, with 53 enterprises being listed and Zhejiang ranked third, with 34 enterprises listed. The number of enterprises in Shandong Province listed among the Top 500 is even larger than the total of Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
