Myanmar: Agriculture officials crack down on unregistered pesticides

Large quantities of unregistered pesticides have been seized during the first six months of this year in Myanmar, said U Thet Zin Maung, deputy director general at the Department of Agriculture.

The seizures were conducted by the authorities to prevent farmers from being duped into buying poor-quality pesticides, U Thet Zin Maung said.

“Up to the end of June , 1179 litres of unregistered liquid pesticide and 4986 kilogrammes of pesticide powder were seized and destroyed,” he said while meeting with reporters on July 2. The unregistered pesticides were discovered through spot checks and regular inspections of distributors, he added.

“The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation only allows the sales of pesticides through registered distributors as the chemicals are crucial to farmers in the country, and there are currently 3801 registered distributors today,” U Thet Zin Maung said.

But unregistered fertilisers and pesticides are still entering the local market through the country’s borders, especially in Kachin State, where much of the unregistered pesticides confiscated last year were found.

Widespread use of pesticides by local farmers did not start until the 1990s, when farmers began using them to protect their crops and gain higher yields, U Thet Zin Maung said.
