According to its statement, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture approved the registration of 42 agrochemicals in June, including pesticides from manufacturers such as Corteva, Bayer and Syngenta that have been waiting for four years, on average, for their products to be released.
The approvals, which brought the total number of registrations this year to 211, were published in the Official Gazette on Monday, 24th June, and included only one new active ingredient or technical product. The others approved were generic substances and products already available on the market, the ministry said.
The previous list of approvals containing 31 products was dated 21st May.
What was released
A novelty among the new approvals is Corteva's technical product, “Rinskor”, which is based on florpyrauxifen-benzyl and is the first new active ingredient approved in 2019. Rinskor has not yet reached the market for use by farmers, and any subsequent products formulated with Rinskor still need to be approved.
According to the ministry, Rinskor is highly effective against infestation by various weeds.
Another 29 new registrations are categorized technical products, and are “generic” active principles already authorized in the country for industrial use, which could be utilized to create new mixtures.
Another 10 chemical and two microbiological products on the list are generic end products or formulated products, which are available for pest control use.
For environmentalists and health professionals, the release of more products, including re-releases of existing products, may increase the dangers to the general public, but ministry argues that the approval of generics will lower the price of pesticides in the country.
