Sales of a key aphicide for use on potato crops have ceased, following reports of residues exceeding maximum limits in Dutch seed crops.

Manufacturer Belchim has taken the precautionary measure to stop selling Teppeki (flonicamid) insecticide to potato growers in Europe, while investigations are under way.

Speaking at Cereals, Belchim’s UK technical manager, Adrian Sisson, stressed that it was still legal to use Teppeki on potatoes and that the product had not been withdrawn.

“We have made the decision to stop selling it for use on potatoes in Europe for now, while we understand how these exceedances have occurred. Growers who already have supplies of the product on farm can still use it legally.

“Use of Teppeki on other crops is unaffected,” he added.

Teppeki is approved for a maximum of two applications to the potato crop and has a 14-day harvest interval.

The aphicide is also approved for use on winter wheat, sugar beet, fodder beet and oilseed rape.
