Agro-biotechnology major, Monsanto Company is reported to be planning to grow a new variety of corn in China, which is a major maize growing country.
Media reports noted that the US-based biotechnology giant, Monsanto has laid out plans to develop a new high-yielding and pest-resistant variety of corn and will be grown in Jilin Province of China on trial basis.
The new corn variety is high-yielding and pest-resistant, Kevin Eblen, Monsantos regional leader for North Asia said.
Monsanto has donated USD 200,000 US to launching the ‘Monsanto Green Village’ in Jilin, the companys second project in China after initiating its first in Hebei Province in 2008.
"Via implementation of the Monsanto green village program, we hope to support more farmers and advance agricultural development in China,” said Kevin Eblen, Monsanto’s regional leader for North Asia.
The programmes aim to educate farmers about agricultural technology and boost recycling in the countryside.
Monsantos global sales in 2009 totaled USD 11.7 billion.
