ESPERANCE Shire Council voted 5-3 to allow the use of 2,4-D High Volatile Esters (HVE) during the summer period of December 1 through to April 30 each year at its Ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday, October 26.
Councillors had previously voted 7-2 not to allow the use of the chemical in the summer period at an All Purpose Committee meeting on October 19.
Councillors Ian Mickel and Beverley Stewart declared a financial interest in the issue as both have farming properties, and abstained from voting on both occasions.
Councillor Peter Paxton was absent from the Ordinary Council meeting.
2,4-D HVE can now be used for summer spraying of weeds, as well as winter spraying.
Council established restrictions on this use in that the chemical must not be used within two kilometres of any township or sensitive crop/industry.
It also cannot be used within one kilometre of any waterway or any susceptible or sensitive area.
The Western Australian state buffer of ten kilometres still applies for grapes and tomatoes.
Councillor Christine Smith maintained her objection to the use of the chemical saying she could not believe council changed its decision just because Nufarm (which supplies the chemical) says it is okay to use.
“There is still so much not known about the long term effects of using chemicals,” she said.
