Data from the Brazilian Association of Biological Control Companies (ABCBio) indicates that 2018 registered a growth in sales of 77% of biological pesticides, jumping from R $ 262.4 million in 2017 to R $ 464.5 million in 2018. The figures were released on March 21 in São Paulo (SP).
"There were segments where the sales increase reached a staggering 148% mark, as in the case of biofungicides," said Arnel Nedel, president of ABCBio.
Nedel added that the main reason for this unprecedented increase in sales is the higher rate of adoption by farmers of biological agents against pests and diseases. As the use of biological pesticides is still in a consolidation phase in Brazil, any increase in the rate of adoption in crops that have occupied large areas, such as soybeans, is enough to result in high sales volumes.
Another factor considered important for the result was the greater adoption of biological by Brazilian rural producers and better coordinated action by the industries in the segment when approaching the producer, offering support and technical assistance, especially in relation to the forms of application of agents that are organisms which, therefore, demand greater control in their management, as well as greater efficiency in the control of pests and diseases.
ABCBio points out that there are cases of biological agents that already present the same effectiveness as conventional products. "What we can see is that there was, and still is, a suppressed demand for plant defense solutions that result in less impact, in terms of waste, the main characteristic of biological agents," said Nedel.
This suppressed demand was evidenced in another survey by ABCBio of the 2017-18 crop, contacting 1,762 farmers across the country. One of the conclusions of the survey was that 43% of rural producers said they did not know about biodefensivos. On the other hand, the acceptance of this input by those who already use it was enormous, since 98% of respondents who used biological pesticides in the 2017-18 crop said they intended to use them again in the next harvest. Among the most cited factors for the use decision is the efficiency of the control, mentioned by 76% of those producers surveyed.
Another factor explaining the excellent sales performance in 2018 was an increase in the launch of innovative products by the biological control industries, added ABCBio.
