With the objective of supporting farmers in carrying out traceability processes in agricultural production, Bayer, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (ABRAS) signed a cooperation agreement during the ABRAS 2019 Convention on March 19, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

The initiative is in compliance with the traceability rules along the production chain of fresh vegetable products for monitoring and control of agricultural defenses, implemented in August 2018 by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA).

By February 2020, all fresh fruits and vegetables intended for the final consumer should be able to be traced throughout all processes, including agricultural production, storage, distribution logistics and sale for consumption, whether by means of labels, QR Code and / or bar code. Therefore, initiatives aimed at training producers are of fundamental importance and Bayer, through the BayG.AP tool, in partnership with IICA, will make available a free online course, starting in June of this year, for farmers.

"BayG.AP is an ally of the farmer, since it brings knowledge about important topics, such as certifications and traceability, food safety, and integrated pest management, among other topics. The goal is to provide the necessary support to the sustainable," said Gerhard Bohne, leader of Bayer's Crop Science division in Brazil. It is an important contribution to the promotion of good agricultural practices, benefiting farmers, partners and consumers.

The cooperation agreement covers the involvement of the three partners: Bayer is responsible for promoting the content of the training course; ABRAS takes care of the dissemination of online content and encourages the participation of producers, including the 32,000 adherents to the Food Traceability and Monitoring Program (RAMA); and IICA offers the course on its virtual platform to all interested farmers.

"The formalization of this partnership between Bayer, IICA and ABRAS is positive because it involves different actors in the fruit and vegetable production chain and brings education to farmers who are suppliers of the retail sector. At the same time, it is innovative because, in addition to the collaboration of different actors, it still delivers a digital solution through an online course, focusing on market trends", noted Marcio Milan, superintendent of ABRAS.
