Mitsui & Co's agrochemical subsidiary, Certis Spain, has launched Nippon Soda's benzimidazole fungicide, Cerobin 45 SC (thiophanate-methyl) in Spain. The product is for use against powdery mildew and Monilia spp on fruits; Fusarium spp and rust on cereals; and powdery mildew and grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) on some vegetables. It is the only remaining benzimidazole on the Spanish market, the company says. The European Commission approved the re-registration of the active ingredient two years ago, following its entry onto Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) in 2005. Certis named the ai among its pipeline products to boost earnings on the Iberian peninsula.

Certis is also to introduce Mitsui's insecticide, Trebon 30 LE (etofenprox), for the next planting season. The company gained a use extension in 2007 for use against peach twig borers (Anarsia lineatella), leafhoppers (Empoasca spp) and Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) on peaches. The product was already registered for use on rice, aubergines, citrus fruit, brassicas, top fruit, tomatoes and pine trees against caterpillars and aphids. The company is awaiting a decision on a use extension against Mediterranean fruit flies on citrus fruit and persimmons. Certis considers the product's use extension applications as strategically important for its product portfolio.
