The third generation of genetically modified soybeans in Brazil will expand control of caterpillars to include two more species that are of concern to the Brazilian agricultural producer: Spodoptera Cosmioides and Helicoverpa armigera. Intacta 2 Xtend is a new seed variety is engineered to resist dicamba and glyphosate, and can also protect the crop against certain species of pest.
Recently, AgroPages interviewed Fábio Passos, the launch leader of Bayer's new soybean technology.
What will the new soybean Intacta 2 Xtend offer to the Brazilian producers?
Intacta 2 Xtend will be the third revolution in the market, the third biotechnology we are bringing to soybeans. There was a big evolution with RR soybeans (Roundup Ready) and then with Intacta. Now we are bringing Intacta 2 Xtend into a platform concept, where we talk about better control of weeds and caterpillars - which Intacta already did, but also with a genetics exclusive and advanced in this technology. We also talk about the management, how I optimize resources and integrate more the areas of the farm, optimizing the application of insecticides, fungicides and so on. So that's the concept. In the end, the commitment is that these tools will generate a return to the producer and increase the level of productivity.
What is the product launch schedule until the total release for commercial cultivation?
We are entering the first phase of launching this product. We have been working in Brazil for eight years now, and now we are in the commercial field, because it is a technology that is not yet fully approved internationally [mainly China]. Let's do an experiment in 300 areas of Brazil. Let's select producers based, not on the history that we already had to launch Intacta and who have already been with us in this story, but also new producers who want to be part of this transition.
They will be able to access our field team, we have an Intacta field transition team that can be consulted to be part of this. It is a project that we do not have limited places from a control point of view, but we must represent regionally the characteristic of the producer of an area of 2 to 5 hectares that represent the local reality of it, not field test or our technical test. So this is an invitation we are going to make to these soybean producers. They are already producers that we already know, who are already with us there in other releases and now we come to them with Intacta 2 Xtend from the next planting crop in the year of 2019.
Will soybean be presented and adapted for each region?
Producers will have access to this product at major fairs in the first half of the year. We will be at Expodireto Cotrijal (in Ijuí / RS) with the technology, and showing for producers a pre-variety. Of course we are talking about pre-varieties, because they are varieties that will reach the producer in the next harvest and we have to determine whether or not they follow the portfolio. But we will show at the fairs that potential and the amount of genetics that we have shipped, which is very robust in this Intacta 2 Xtend platform.
