Luiz Lourenço criticizes Brazil suspension of glyphosate: Andav Congress

The Director of the Brazilian Association of Farm Business, Luiz Lourenço, has strongly criticized the suspension of glyphosate.
The association leader, who refused to accept the suspension until the time of planting, said that there is a lot of misinformation in the society, which is harming the development of farm business.
“People are not aware, for instance, that Brazil has a vegetable coverage in 66% of its territory and that the champion of pesticide use is Japan, not Brazil. The longevity in Japan is much superior to ours and they are champions in the use of pesticides,”Lourenço said during the Andav Congress held last week in São Paulo.
The director also criticized the delay in the analysis before the approval and regulation in the use of agrochemicals. He defended the approval of the pesticides bill, which established less time for the analysis and revisions of these products.
“What is being proposed is that there should be a timeframe for Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) to evaluate and respond because these products are approved all over the world. In all the advanced countries where it is approved for agriculture, it has worked. Why should it not work here?”he asked.
According to Lourenço, the problem is not the pesticides, but the delay in approval. “What happens is that there is a delay in the analysis of the new products. Today, in Brazil, we are using more toxic products than others under analysis, that is, if we approve the one that is there, it is better than this one in terms of toxicity. This is the problem, the delay of Anvisa,” he said in conclusion.
