Brazil AgrochemShow 2018: Pesticide bill enables ‘safer and more efficient’ pesticides

Agronomist and lawyer from the studio Amaral e Carvalho, Dr. Paulo Cesar Campos Amaral, has assured that Bill PL No 6299/2002, which is about the issue of registration of agrochemicals, will enable the trade of safer and more efficient pesticides.
According to the expert, the idea may be considered controversial due to the electoral period, but is needed for the good development of agriculture and to fight hunger.
“These are measures that seek to stimulate technical activities of the three agencies and rationalize review of many products that have standards and conditions of use which not only authorized by the federal agencies of the health, agriculture and environmental sectors, but also already analyzed exhaustively abroad,” he said at a lecture during the 11th Brazil AgrochemShow, an event organized by AllierBrasil and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Sub-council of Chemical Industry (CCPIT CHEM) on August 7 and 8, in the state of São Paulo. AgroPages attended the show as an exhibitor.
According to Amaral, the removal of barriers to allow new suppliers and products into the country will promote a variety of products and will also end what he calls a “nefarious monopoly”. In this context, he also criticized the undue delay in the approval of pesticide, which currently takes a minimum of eight years and can reach up to 12 years.
“New products can bring new technologies that are safer and more efficient. We want to follow the world. The entrance of new suppliers will extenuate monopoly, which is nefarious for the society. People have to pay for the extraordinary profit caused by monopoly, which is beyond reasonable remuneration,” he opined.
The expert stipulated a deadline that he believes to be necessary for the analysis of agrochemicals. “The report indicates 24 months, which can be extended. I believe that this time frame is reasonable. The technicians do not need to spend eight years for analysing. They work hard. The agencies delay because there is no coordination,” added Amaral.
