BASF, in partnership with Horizon Ag, released the Provisia™ Rice System, making the Provisia seed variety — PVL01 — available for limited launch this 2018 season. Growers are encouraged to work with their BASF representative to plan the crop rotation needed to use the new system.

The Provisia Rice System enables growers to apply the Provisia herbicide on the Provisia seed crop. The system also serves as an essential tool to help growers control resistant weeds, specifically red rice, volunteer rice and annual grasses. Growers can plant Provisia after a rotation of soybeans or conventional rice, allowing for a three-year rotation of the Provisia Rice System, the Clearfield® Production System and soybeans. This rotation provides growers with the best chance of keeping weed resistance under control.

“No matter what crop growers are planting in their fields this growing season, it’s never too early to start planning for entry into the Provisia Rice System,” said Donnarie Hales, BASF Product Manager. “BASF and Horizon Ag representatives are working with growers to help them make those planning decisions now to ensure they have an effective weed resistance program in place. Ultimately, having clean fields allows growers to focus on other aspects of their operation.”

As part of a three-year rotational program of rice-rice-soybeans, the Provisia Rice System also promotes the longevity of the Clearfield Production System for rice, and allows farmers to grow sustainable rice longer to prevent resistance.

“This is the first herbicide tolerant system in the U.S. rice market since the Clearfield Production System was released 15 years ago,” said Hales. “Not only will the Provisia Rice System give growers additional options for weed control in rice, it will also help extend the life of the Clearfield System.”

The new system will be available to a select number of growers in 2018, based on the total amount of harvested seed from the 2017 season. Growers can learn more about the Provisia Rice System at agriculture.basf.com.
