The Foreign Trade Chamber Executive Department (Camex) in Brazil has rejected a request for an increase of the tariff rate to import formulated agrochemicals that came from the Brazilian industry and was forwarded to Camex by the Ministry of Agriculture, Foreign Trade, and Services (MDIC).
The initiative was aimed to increase the rate (currently zero) to eight percent but was rejected by Camex experts, according to Minister of Agriculture, Blairo Maggi.
“This was a conquest of farmers. We have ensured that we maintain the rate at zero. We will always preserve the wealth of farmers,” the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply said.
Maggi revealed a proposal that is yet to be presented to Camex to increase the rate for imported rubber. According to him, however, the request was not evaluated in this meeting and would be reintroduced within a time of 25 days — date from the next scheduled meeting of the Camex directors.
When releasing the statistical data of last year, the Brazilian Association of the Chemical Industry (Abiquim) complained about the record of imports registered in 2017.
“It is urgent to generate jobs and income with added value to the Brazilian natural resources within the national territory [..] Exporting primary goods to import transformed added value product is not a consistent strategy with the challenges and opportunities that are observed for the next years and less for the size of Brazil in the world,” complained Executive-President of Abiquim, Fernando Figueiredo.
