Early development work by Monsanto on genetically modified dicamba-tolerant and glufosinate-tolerant cotton should pave the way for the first three-way herbicide tolerance stack with Roundup Ready Flex, the company says. Monsanto plans to combine Bayer CropSciences glufosinate tolerance trait with its own proprietary traits under a "multi-partner stacking strategy", says market development and marketing manager Rich Voth.

The development of cotton lines with tolerance to three different herbicides will broaden the weed control options available to farmers. "We will be able to offer multiple weed management options in season and the breadth of herbicides will be a key component in mitigating weed resistance," Mr Voth says.

Some 87% of the US upland cotton area was planted with GM lines last year, with herbicide-tolerant lines accounting for 28% of the total, insect-resistant lines 17% and stacked lines 42%. The USDA estimates that over 80% of the cotton area contained glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready or Roundup Ready Flex traits, Monsanto notes. Glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink lines account for about 2.5% of the total area, according to Bayer.
