The Colombian competitiveness regulatory agency, Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC), has conditionally approved Bayer- Monsanto merger.
According to the SIC, Bayer has to sell its watermelon seed business at the local level and that covers all the products identified with the Nunhems brand.
In this way, the integration between Bayer and Compañía Agrícola S.A.S., the main firm Monsanto operates locally, will be allowed.
The request for integration was presented in April 2017 to the SIC and, in addition to analyzing Compañía Agrícola S.A.S., the SIC studied market measurements, which provided them with items such as herbicides and seeds of carrot, paprika, tomato, cucumber and watermelon. Although the merger of Bayer and Monsanto - which globally amounts to 66,000 million dollars - passed without major problems in Colombia, in other geographies such as the European Union, it was investigated whether, among others, it reduced competition in herbicides and seeds. Bayer S.A., with sales in 2016 of 1.5 billion pesos, and Compañía Agrícola, with 88,000 million, remain legally independent in the country.
