The Kumato tomato is now available in Turkey. First bred by Syngenta in Spain they are now appearing in supermarkets and grocery stores in Turkey. The brown tomato has been introduced by Uzmanlar Serac?l?k, a Turkish greenhouse company, who started trials in their greenhouses last year.
"Before the trials, we also conducted various surveys and research. These showed Kumato could be best raised in the Antalya region, thanks to its ideal climate,” said Nurettin Yurdagül, chairman of the board at Uzmanlar Serac?l?k according to the Hürriyet Daily News today.
The Kumato is well consumed in Mediterranean countries and Uzmanlar is targeting production at 400 tons this year.
Kumato were first raised by Luis Ortega, a young Spanish farmer, in the 1970s.
