Some 70 genetically-modified events, which were designed to improve yields or the quality of agricultural production, were authorized in the last 30 years in Argentina.

Now, the Biotechnology Advisory Committee of the National Service of Health and Food Quality (Senasa) has successfully assessed three genetically-modified events.

The three genetically-modified events were carthamus with chymosin; glyphosate-tolerant alfalfa and reduced lignin content; coleoptera and lepidoptera resistant and glyphosate-tolerant corn. The risk evaluation compared the genetically-modified and the conventional counterparts, examining their differences and evaluating their biological relevance.

“Senasa is the agency that is responsible for the process of food risk assessment of transformation events product of modern biotechnology,” explained Juan Carlos Batista, Director of Food Quality at the Senasa.

Experts at the Food Quality Directorship in the Senasa checked the documents and the analyses presented by the event developers, and as they did not find any technical corrections approved them.

“The scientific staff evaluated meticulously the information presented by each company to detect any transgenesis that would generate unexpected effects on the metabolism of the crop or the product. In order to do that, the principles and guidance established by the Codex Alimentarius were followed in the matter, besides the consensus documents of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), namely, molecular studies, the quality and quantity composition, the toxicology of the new protein, the potential allergenicity and the nutritional capacity of the complete food,” revealed Julio Eliseix, Biotechnology and Industrialized Products Coordinator at Senasa.

The National Investigation and Scientific Council (Conicet), the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (Inta), the Association of Argentinian Seed Companies and the Direction of Biotechnology of the Ministry of Agriculture participated in the process.

The approval of a new event has three components: Senasa analyzes the human and animal food aptitude, while the Directorates of Market and the Biotechnology of the Ministry of Agriculture evaluate the commercial and agroecological impact, respectively.
