Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved the toxicological evaluation of the insecticide emamectin benzoate and its formulated product Proclaim 50®. With this certification, emamectin benzoate moves a step further towards its definitive registration in Brazil. This active ingredient was authorized in six Brazilian states for the control of Helicoverpa armigera outbreak.

The decision was published in the Official Union Gazette on November 6 through Resolution RE No. 2,941 of November 3rd of 2017. This has been dispatched by the substitute general manager of GGTOX, Graziela Costa Araujo.

Currently, emamectin benzoate has been registered in several countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan and European Community.

Proclaim 50, made by Syngenta, is one of the products that received priority classification for registration by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Mapa) at the beginning of 2017. Besides Mapa, the insecticide has to be released by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).

According to the Anvisa resolution, “The publication of the extract of this report of toxicological evaluation does exempt the requester from following the other evaluations preceded by the agencies of agriculture [Mapa] and environment [Ibama], according to the ruling legislation in the country, applicable to the requirement”.

Further, Syngenta reports that Proclaim is a selective insecticide that interrupts the nerve impulses of several Lepidoptera caterpillars. “Right after the exposition and the ingestion of the product, the larvae stop from feeding and paralyzes irreversibly. The maximum mortality is obtained after three or four days”, says the product leaflet.
