Syngenta Philippines Inc. obtained the highest yield marks in the recently conducted Corn Derby by the Department of Agriculture – Cagayan Valley Research Center (CVRC) in San Felipe, Ilagan City. Three corn varieties of Syngenta landed on the top 3 best performing hybrids in the contest, namely NK8840BtGT followed by NK6414BtGT and NK6410BtGT.
The corn derby is a project of the Department of Agriculture that exhibits varieties of hybrid corn from various seed companies and intends to enhance farmers’ knowledge on adopting the best corn production technologies available in the market. It carried the theme “Sagupaan ng mgaDekalidadna Hybrid para saMataasna Kita” which aims to determine which corn variety has an outstanding performance in terms of germination, plant vigor and yield.
Out of the fifteen (15) different corn hybrids that were tested, Syngenta’s NK8840BtGT led the derby with a generated yield of 12,823.23 kg per hectare (with an equivalent value of 143,620.18 pesos at recent PHP11.20 farmgate price of corn grain), based from the certification from DA CVRC Region 02. This high yielding hybrid is recognized for its big cob, big kernels, proven consistent high yield over the years and ease of harvesting. Syngenta also produces exceptional hybrid corn varieties which landed at second and third place called NK6414BtGT, which is suitable for high population and NK6410BtGT, known to be the No. 1 Growers’ Choice in the latest Syngenta Corn tour because it can be harvested early at 100 days after planting.
As part of Syngenta’s commitment in improving global food security, the company remains to be one of the leading hybrid corn seed producers globally to enable farmers to make better use of available resources.
Mr. Darwin Villanueva, Technical Sales Lead, expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the certification of DA CVRC Region 02, “We are happy with the results of the Corn Derby in Region 2 where three of our varieties were acknowledged as the highest yielding corn hybrids. We would like to thank our farmers and partners for this honor. Syngenta will continue to carry out our commitment in increasing agricultural production and helping the farmers feed a fast-growing population.”
The success of this program is a product of an effective partnership of public and private sectors towards the growth of the corn industry in the Philippines.
