Brazilian scientists create glasses that identifies citrus greening

The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) has developed, in partnership with the Federal University of São Carlos, an eyeglass that identifies symptoms of Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as greening.

The equipment has lenses coated with a special filter that allow one to see the main trait of the disease, known as leaf mottling or yellowing, because it intensifies the contrast of colors between green and yellow, which are the characteristics of plague.

The glasses also help the visual inspection of greening in citrus crops, easing the work of inspectors, reducing the rate of mistakes in the identification of the disease, and impart visual protection for the user. Though several techniques are being developed to improve the identification of the plants infected, so far there is no knowledge of any device for application of visual inspection of greening in the field.

Based on the traditional method, greening, the worst disease in citrus in the last years, can be identified through visual inspection by trained professionals, but with high rates of failure. Experts believe that half of the symptomatic plants are maintained in the field because of inspection errors, that allows the proliferation of the disease between healthy trees.

The technology, which is already patented, is available with Fhocus Optical Solutions, a licensed company for the manufacturing and commercialization of glasses. According to the Marketing Director of Fhocus, Cledio Romero Rodriguez, the unit cost of the glasses is estimated to be around R$200, but should be reduced to the volumes acquired.
