China's consumption of insecticide declining

Wang Jianjiang, researcher of Plant Management Division of Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said at the meeting that the Chinese insecticide market witnessed the decline trend in both the consumption and proportion.
♦ Total consumption: Since 2011, the average annual consumption of insecticide (converted into 100%) is about 126,000 tons, decreased by 13% compared with the annual use from 1991 to 2010.
♦ The proportion of consumption: after 2011, the use of insecticide accounted for 41.8% of the total pesticide consumption. It accounted for more than 70% in the 1980s while dropped to 50% from 2000 to 2009.
Zhang Wenjun, chief agronomist of ICAMA, said that with the development of technology, the upgrade of policy requirements in environmental protection as well as the update in pesticide varieties structure, the industry restructuring and integration occurred frequently and broadly among both the multinational corporations and domestic enterprises. Among them, the insecticide structure adjustment is the biggest in the three pesticide categories, showing optimization of varieties structure. It also speeds up the elimination of the old pesticide varieties with large consumption and bad control effect while promoting the widely environmentally friendly pesticides with high efficiency and low toxicity.
However, China is also facing some challenges like the increasing difficulty in development and innovation of pesticides and increasing drug resistance caused by irrational use. In order to solve these problems, the insecticide industry even the whole pesticide industry should put the focus on speeding the structural reform of the supply front in pesticide as well as scientific and reasonable promotion and application of insecticide.
