Exosect researcher, Kristi Thomas, provided representatives from the agricultural industry with a preliminary insight into an Entostat® enabled sprayable formulation of a systemic herbicide.
At the ‘Crop Production in Southern Britain’ conference taking place this week in Peterborough, UK, Kristi Thomas shared preliminary data on an Entostat based SC formulation of the systemic herbicide, Quizalofop-p-ethyl. 
Thomas commented, ‘Our studies show that Quizalofop-p-ethyl is compatible with Entostat technology and in initial trials comparing the Entostat formulation of Quizalofop-p-ethyl to the commercial standard, Pilot Ultra, the Entostat formulation achieves comparable results. The next step will be to optimise the formulation further to maintain the same level of efficacy at a reduced concentration of active ingredient’.
Exosect launched its sprayable development programme in 2016 at the Crops & Chemicals conference in Berlin with the announcement that it had developed an SC foliar application of the pyrethroid, Deltamethrin. Studies showed that Entostat facilitated a more targeted delivery and increased bioefficacy: the amount of chemical adhering to the leaf immediately after spraying was more than doubled, while mortality of the target pest 46 days after crop spraying was 20% higher than with the comparable commercial standard.
Quizalofop-p-ethyl is an important selective, post emergence herbicide used for the control of grassy weeds on a range of crops. In 2016, BASF announced the imminent launch of its new Provisia™ rice system. The herbicide tolerant Provisia seeds will allow rice growers to safely use this herbicide in rice production1. Simultaneously, Colorado State University has developed a wheat trait resistant to Quizalofop which is scheduled for release in 20182. 
Exosect’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr Aoife Dillon added, “Since our initial success using Entostat in a sprayable format, we have expanded our formulation programme and opened it up to commercial partners.  Across a range of plant protection products we have seen that Entostat enables a reduction in active ingredient. It is important that formulation technology can offer the agrochemical industry options for reducing active ingredient concentration in order to increase sustainability and differentiation of their products”.
