The Dairy Cattle Development Program (PDPL), which provides technological and social assistance to dairy farmers in the Viçosa-MG region, is hosting the X Vitrine do Milho Silagem to be held on February 15 in Cajuri-MG, Brazil.
The event will bring together farmers and students at Fazenda Nô da Silva.
The annual event will present this year the BRS 658 forage sorghum, developed by Embrapa Milho and Sorgo.
The general manager of the business office of Embrapa Produtos e Mercados, from Sete Lagoas-MG, Reginaldo Rezende Coelho, explained that Vitrine combines technologies perfected by companies that work with genetics and breeding of corn seeds for silage.
"Embrapa Maize and Sorghum develops specific cultures for silage, so we are seeking to participate in this event to demonstrate the sorghum hybrid BRS 658. As in the Zona da Mata, traditionally farmers plant maize. Forage sorghum is little known to growers there. It will be another crop option to produce high quality silage," said Coelho.
Researcher José Avelino Santos Rodrigues, who will present the sorghum, will show the producers that the sorghum seed costs less and leads to good productivity.
The main characteristics of sorghum BRS 658 will be presented, among them, drought tolerance; re-growth ability, which allows a second cut and more productivity in the same area; high quality of forage and average of 50 t/ha of green mass production; and resistance to lodging and high leaf health.
"Since this cultivar was launched in May 2016, the first seed crop is now available for purchase. BRS 658 will be announced at this event by the company Riber KWS Sementes Ltd, which is licensed by Embrapa and is responsible for the multiplication and commercialization of the seeds," said Reginaldo Coelho, adding that over the next few years, they intend to bring to the Vitrine corn cultivars of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum and elephant grass of Embrapa Cattle of Milk.
The PDPL agronomist, Thiago Camacho Rodrigues, takes care of the technical field of Vitrine and contacts with the companies.
He pointed out that Vitrine do Milho has become a trademark in the Zona da Mata mineira for the dissemination of the main technologies for the production of corn silage meant for farmers.
"This year, sorghum will be an innovation because producers from warmer regions have been asking for it. Therefore, we consider that the presence of Embrapa, which has made available and planted the sorghum BRS 658 in Vitrine, something very welcome,” said Rodrigues.
Another unique aspect of this year’s event, pointed out Rodrigues, will be the demonstration of agricultural machinery —vacuum seeder and harvesters —used for the production of corn silage and sorghum.
"The event will have two segments. The morning session will be aimed at students from the agrarian and related sciences, where the lectures will have more technical vocabulary. The afternoon session will be for producers who will receive more information regarding the concepts and management techniques in case of corn and sorghum for silage.
In the field, participants will be able to see the silage specific corn hybrids, displayed there by 10 companies, and also the Embrapa sorghum.
