The European Commission has confirmed the re-registration of the herbicides, prosulfocarb and clomazone, and the fungicide, fludioxonil. They will be added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) on November 1st. The move represents the first re-registrations of active ingredients in the third round of the EU review of existing ais (Agrow No 532, p 11).
EU member states have until April 30th 2009 to check that existing products containing these ais comply with the conditions of Annex I listing, and until October 31st 2012 to re-register products.
The Annex I conditions stipulate that, when registering prosulfocarb-based products, member states must pay attention to the protection of operator safety, aquatic organisms and non-target plants. No-spray buffer zones should be imposed where necessary. Registration of clomazone also requires appropriate risk mitigation measures, including the use of personal protective equipment by operators and the imposition of buffer zones to protect non-target plants.
When approving fludioxonil for uses other than seed treatments, member states must impose appropriate risk mitigation measures to protect ground water, fish and aquatic invertebrates.
