By Think Real - According to the latest agricultural data by the Vietnam Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (MARD), in the first ten months of 2016, Vietnam imported USD575 million worth of pesticides, among which 47.5% were originated from China by value.
The Executive of the Plant Protection Department of the MARD, Nguyen Xuan Hong, explained that 85%-90% of the pesticides purchased by Vietnam importers were from China by volume recently. However, not all imported raw materials and pesticides in Vietnam are sold and used in the domestic market, and most are processed into mixed formulations and exported to other countries.
When asked why imported agrochemicals from China can’t be produced in Vietnam, Hong said that chemical production is not the strength of the country. He said that to have strong chemical competitiveness, the country needs to master the correct investment technologies, fundamental facilities and human resources, which can’t be built and operated in the short term.
Currently, the chemical production in Vietnam is still weak compared with other countries. However, the country actually doesn’t encourage the investment in the field considering its high pollution.
